The Community Chalkboard and Podium: An Interactive Monument to Free Expression Charlottesville, VA
The 2009 Selection Committee chose the Community Chalkboard as a Silver Medal winner in recognition of the quality of its design, the widespread use of the Chalkboard by the citizens of Charlottesville to express personal and political messages, and the availability of the Chalkboard to all citizens of the City. They commended the project as:
- A beautifully designed installation, fabricated of locally mined Burlington slate that enlivens a new public plaza at the east end of the downtown mall;
- An interactive monument that is available for the unrestricted use of the public at all hours of the day and night;
- A monument to freedom of expression that attracts users of all races and ages, and is intellectually accessible to all people.
