Hunts Point Riverside Park Bronx, NY
The 2009 Selection Committee chose Hunts Point Riverside Park as a Silver Medal winner in recognition of the grassroots effort that created the parks, the first new public park in Hunts Point in many years, and the importance of creating recreational opportunity on the Bronx River. The Committee commended the project for:
- Transformation of a degraded industrial area into a natural retreat for family recreation;
- Creating a new venue for community meeting and youth programs, and offering a green oasis in a highly urbanized environment;
- Developing the first public recreational access to the Bronx River, and a showcase for ongoing river reclamation efforts;
- Completing the first stage of development of a fully articulated South Bronx Greenway, connecting communities to each other and the waterway, and eventually providing bike connections to Manhattan and other boroughs.
