Inner-City Arts Los Angeles, CA
The 2009 Selection Committee chose Inner-City Arts as the 2009 Gold Medal winner in recognition of the quality of its design, the excellence of its programming, and its ability to have a transformative impact on the children it serves. They commended the project for:
- Its use of art education to positively affect the lives of inner-city children, improving their chances to lead constructive and successful lives by developing creativity, improving learning skills and building self-confidence;
- Its commitment to the children of the Skid Row area of Los Angeles, many of whom are homeless and at-risk;
- The quality of the architecture by Michael Maltzan Architects, which creates a safe and inviting place of elegance and beauty for children;
- Inner-City Arts's contribution to the revitalization of the neighborhood through its long-term presence and continued facility development
