The 2009 Selection Committee chose St. Joseph Rebuild Center as a Silver Medal winner in recognition of its design quality and creativity of this new model for responding to disaster situations across the country. The Committee commended St. Joseph Rebuild Center for:
  • Providing a day center for homeless people that provides services including meals, showers, laundry, phone calls, health and mental health care, and many others;
  • The quality of the design, by the Mercy Detroit Collaborative Design Center, which uses simple materials, and student labor to create an oasis for homeless individuals in an industrial area of New Orleans;
  • The creative collaboration among four Catholic agencies to come together and provide services for New Orleans homeless population.
